I don't know about you, but I never have enough drawers! Especially in my camper, where I only have two small drawers. This project will work in your home too!
I recently came up with a way to double the storage in my drawers!
Step 1 is to enlarge the hole that the drawer goes into. The front of the drawer overlaps the face of the cabinet by quite a bit. The first thing I did was cut the hole in the cabinet so that it is just a little smaller than the drawer front. This means I can put larger items in the drawer and still close it
You can see in the photo above that the hole in the cabinet was originally as high as that line onthe left side. I carefully cut it larger using a jigsaw so that I could have an extra 1/2" clearance.
I love this thing! and it was only $30 - they have a newer version now, it's probably even better!
Step 2 is to build or buy some dividers that can stack on each other.
First I cut strips from thin plywood and assembled them into the drawer, leaving enough room for a second layer to sit on top. Measure the hole in the cabinet, and make a tray that will fit with about 1/4" or more clearance.
Make the second layer smaller than the first layer, so you can slide it back and forth to access the bottom areas.
This is what it looks like from the side. You can see how much higher it is than the original drawer, but clears the new opening with room to spare!
I made one for the bottom drawer which holds all sorts of small miscellaneous items. It seemed to be full until I made the dividers, now it's got lots of room to fill up LOL
You may be able to find readymade drawer dividers that will fit your drawers. Here are a couple ideas for you to look at:
